Reflections on International Women's Day

Positive, inclusive and forward-thinking

Wednesday, March 8, 2017

Women’s Network PEI wishes everyone a Happy International Women’s Day! Today is important for many reasons.

It is not just a celebration of women but a celebration of feminism. A celebration of the bold women who fought for change and inspired generations of women to follow in their footsteps.

International Women’s Day is a time to reflect.

What does feminism mean? Does it work? Who is included? Who isn’t?

All of these questions (and many more) are important. Feminists everywhere regardless of their type of feminism(s) should take time to reflect.

On ‘International Women’s Day’ we recognize women around the globe. We remind everyone that women and girls deserve equal opportunities and freedom from oppression.

It’s important on International Women’s Day to not think only of women and girls. Feminist movements exist across the globe and people have been coming together as feminists to resist inequality, injustice and oppression.

It’s important to remember that feminism is not just about gender.  Feminists imagine a world where all individuals are able to live in dignity and equality, free from the oppression and marginalization that currently exists in our society.

Feminism may seem complex.

Ultimately if you think we can create a better world, one that is more equitable for all then you are probably a feminist.

Welcome to the party!
