Senior's Literacy Research Project
July 1999 - April 2000
funded by the National Literacy Secretariat

Background
Women's Network PEI was interested in conducting empirical research about senior's literacy on PEI. The need was identified and a literature review was conducted to clarify what has been done to address the issue of seniors' literacy rates. Face-to-face individual interviews were conducted to understand the circumstances of seniors' lives that have lead to low literacy rates, to understand the coping strategies employed by some seniors allowing them to manage with low literacy skills and to build on this process by investigating the factors which would encourage seniors to consider increasing their literacy skills. We recognized the need for seniors to be involved in all facets of the research thereby ensuring their ownership of the process and outcomes. We saw this province-wide research having national application as its findings were used to support project proposals, programs and policy changes across Canada.

Goal:
The goal of the Senior's Literacy Research Project is to examine the historical context of literacy in the lives of seniors, to examine literacy coping skills used by seniors and to determine which social marketing techniques attract interested seniors to literacy programs. The long term impact of this project will be an increase in the rate of literacy among Island seniors.

Objectives:
  • To conduct a literature review to explore the issue of seniors' literacy as previously examined through research and project work
  • To conduct research pertaining to literacy levels of seniors on PEI, in order to understand the circumstances that lead to low literacy rates
  • To research the coping skills and strategies employed by low literacy seniors
  • To investigate methods of attracting interested seniors to literacy programs through the use of social marketing approaches
