Crime Prevention for Women with Disabilities, Phase II
    The Problem to be addressed:
The three partner organizations will build on the knowledge and information gained from the one day symposium, Crime Prevention for Women with Disabilities, held November 3, 2001. The Strategic Plan that is being developed will be the blue print for the work that will role out during this project. Now that we have a grasp of what is already happening to support women with disabilities, we need to fill in the gaps of those resources that are missing and bring them to the table.

    Project Idea:
The partnership between Women's Network PEI, DAWN and HIRC has been solidified, and new relationships have been built through the Advisory Committee. Building on the work done at the one day symposium, the Coordinator will work with the Partners and Advisory Committee to develop the recommendations brought forth in the Strategic Plan that will reduce the victimization and violence against women with disabilities. Mobilizing community leaders and groups to affect change in our province will be the focus.

Now that we have engaged the interest of the groups involved in the Advisory Committee, we will continue to seek their input, support and networking abilities to developing how we roll out the recommendations in the Strategic Plan. Those involved to this point have been The Association for Community Living, Kensington Town Police, PEI Council of the Disabled, PEI People First, PEI Crime Prevention Association, East Prince Women's Information Centre, Victim Services, Adult Protection branch of Health and Social Services, Citizen's Advocacy, and the Rape Crises and Sexual Assault Crises Centre. Other groups who participated in the Symposium and have had a voice in the Strategic Plan are Canadian Mental Health Association, West Prince Health, Transportation West, Office of the Senior's Liason, Health and Social Services. Other groups who were unable to participate in the Symposium, but hope to take part in the Strategic Plan include, Transition House Association, Eastern and Western School Boards, ACE Program at UPEI, and the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence.

    Community Mobilization:
We have been active in mobilizing the community around the issue of Community Safety for Women with Disabilities. Through the process of rolling out the Strategic Plan, there is more to do in the area of involving community and town councils in this process. We hope to bring these groups to a more active role.
